
MARTIN "GREYWOLF" MURPHY has been an incorrigible rhythm junkie his entire life. He became a percussion instructor and rhythm circle facilitator in 1992, after years of study. He was the co-founder (with Eugene Snowden) of Orlando’Äôs Umoja Percussion Ensemble. He has incorporated a wide diversity of tribal instruments (as well as found and created ones) into his performances and recordings.
He has also played with Red Shift Mantra; Mizna; Gypsy Caravan; and the Gypsy Caravan Remix Band. He is curently involvd in the Manteis Project and the Flammable Babylon Percusion Ensemble (ebut performance soon!)
His discography includes Sambadromo (Bodhisattva); Sambadromo (Bananas); Red Shift Mantra (Phoneme, 2005), and Gypsy Caravan (Remarkably Re-Mixed Caravan Rhythms - 2007). Greywolf produced and released The SHREDD! Percussion Ensemble CD ’ÄúThis Is Your Brain On Drums’Äù in 2003, and ’ÄúTribical’Äù in 2007.
He has studied with modern-day drum masters in West & Central African traditions on ngoma, djembe, and duns, as well as Middle Eastern technique & rhythms on Egyptian/Moroccan tabla, riq, and frame drums. He produced, directed, and performed in the award-winning ’ÄúThe Extraordinary Fila’Äù for the 2005 and 2006 Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival. Other notable performances include Maja’Äôs Spirit of the Tribes 5 and 6 (2005-6).
Greywolf completed the Remo HealthRhythms Facilitator Training (twice) and is a Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI) Authorized Provider, and as a PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) Drum Faciltator helped found both the Orlando, FL and Portland, OR chapters of PURE. He also founded a ’ÄúDrums Not Drugs’Äù program in Orlando, FL and presented drumming as a community and self-esteem building exercise for at-risk and challenged youth at counseling centers and in various schools.
