Kirtan is an artful practice of connecting to the spirit within our hearts. Through the repetition of mantras we can open our hearts energy and allow ourselves to soften and rest. Allow yourSelf to dive into the ocean of devotion. Travel to a deeper connection of your hearts energy. As we connect deeper within, we open up the heart chakra, and revive our connection to the divine love that surrounds us.
Kirtan gives us a channel to direct emotions, to play with them. It is devotional yogic chanting, done in a call and response form, usually with the help of musical instruments, the most sacred being our voices. Through the repetition of mantra, the mind relaxes and our emotional body flows and dances on the sound vibrations created. Our heart-body opens and the spirit emerges. Cleansing the energy and connecting deeper to the divine envelope of love that already surrounds us.
While most of the mantras have been delivered through the Hindu tradition, all backgrounds and beliefs are welcome in the space of kirtan. The practice delivered through the individual is personal. There are many paths and each of us continues in our own way. As we navigate our way through, we open ourselves up. When we are open, the divine can enter. No prior experience is necessary. The truth is in our own experience of that divine energy that circulates through our temple of the Self. Kirtan can aide you on your path, opening the energy, cleansing your temple, and healing you along the way.
The following is an excerpt from 'Pilgrim of the Heart' audio series by Krishna Das: "The words of these chants are called the divine names and they come from a place that's deeper than our hearts and our thoughts, deeper than the mind. And so as we sing them they turn us towards ourselves, into ourselves. They bring us in, and as we offer ourselves into the experience, the experience changes us. These chants have no meaning other than the experience that we have by doing them. They come from the Hindu tradition, but it's not about being a Hindu, or believing anything in advance. It's just about doing it, and experiencing. Nothing to join, you just sit down and sing."
